Chapter 9: Extrapulmonary TB

8.1. Complex pleural effusion: On the right side, a dark shadow is visible. This is due to a bone structure (a rib) causing an artefact (acoustic shadow). Behind it, parts of the spleen and the echogenic diaphragm can be seen. Above the diaphragm, a large, partly-anechoic, partly-echogenic pleural effusion is visible. The echogenic material shows fibrinous strands and septations. Inside the pleural effusion, the basal parts of the lung can be seen as echogenic areas, causing bright artifacts due to the air in the lung.
