Clinical Implementation of Point-of-Care-Ultrasound in HIV, TB and Hepatitis Care in Africa
Who Are We?
We are a group of clinicians and ultrasound enthusiasts working in Lighthouse clinic at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. We are taking care of numerous outpatients and inpatients with HIV, TB and hepatitis B within Malawi’s National ART program. We are trained in POCUS and are using the technology on a daily base in the care of our patients to guide clinical decisions in the African resource-limited setting.
What We Offer
- Clinical 1:1 discussion with experienced POCUS users on clinical decision making using our spectrum of POCUS protocols. We are using PowerPoint presentations with many video clips and images collected from patients here at Lighthouse clinic to stimulate the discussion.
- Observation of real-time patients and decision making as part of our daily routine in the clinic and on the ward.
- A context-specific ultrasound manual to give you a more detailed idea of how we use ultrasound at Lighthouse.
What We Do Not Offer
- Basic training in POCUS technique
- Accommodation and transport (reach out to us if you need and we can support you with contact information)

- FAST – Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma
- FASH – Focused Assessment with Sonography for HIV-associated TB
- CURLS – Cardiac Ultrasound in Resource-Limited Settings
- PUSH – Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Hepatitis

- US-guided lymph node biopsy

What Should You Bring?
- At least basic knowledge in ultrasound technology, POCUS protocols and ultrasound anatomy
- Some time (1–2 weeks) to stay with us at Lighthouse clinic in Lilongwe, Malawi
- A white coat and enthusiasm to learn how we integrate POCUS technology in our care
Terms and Conditions
Observership at our institution is only possible for visitors with medical background (e.g., residents, medical students, clinical officers). Each observership needs to be authorized by Lighthouse leadership.
We value our clients’ confidentiality, privacy and dignity — as such you will have to sign appropriate confidentiality and training agreements with the Lighthouse training department. In case of breaches of our codes, Lighthouse may terminate the observership at any point in time.
Lighthouse will NOT accept ANY liability for injury, loss or damage of property arising from the stay for observership at our institution. Observers are required to apply infection prevention measures as they consider adequate using their own clinical judgement and as guided by the prevailing infection prevention precautions.
We will provide standard gloves and face masks. If special items are required, these need to be brought by the observer.
